January’s Artist of the Month
Vikram Dayal
Originally from India, Vikram Dayal won his first prize in painting at the Shankar’s On the Spot Painting Competition in Delhi at the age of six. As Vikram puts it, “Many of those who saw the painting felt that I did not deserve the prize and I should stop painting. Therefore, I participated in many other international painting competitions and won awards in quite a few of them. I stopped painting in my teenage years when I encountered the power and purity of science. At that time I believed that all art must die to accommodate science.”
Fortunately for the rest of us, in later years he learned about the incredibly rich Indian folk art tradition, which still dominates his style and palette. “After devoting many years to solving the world’s problems through science, I have restarted painting. As usual, my art has continued to please and annoy at the same time.
“My art looks at the humorous aspects of life – quite often through satire. If my painting has evoked some response, be it ridicule, anger or outrage, I am flattered. If you see the humor that I see, I am thrilled! The only way of insulting my art is by ignoring it. Laugh at it, ridicule it, curse it, burn it, throw it, just please don’t ignore it!”
