The Manassas Art Guild has completed it’s search for a new logo! Some of you may or may not have noticed the new logo on the home page of this website.

The Winner: Alexander Belgrave.

Mr. Belgrave has been contacted and notified of winning the contest and will be presented with the prize money for the contest at the March MAG Membership meeting.

For all of the other artists who submitted logos for consideration, the Board of Directors and Membership of MAG would like to thank you for all your efforts and for submitting your ideas. There were quite a few nice logos submitted for consideration but unfortunately only one could win. Mr. Belgrave’s logo was felt to represent the Guild most closely to our ideals, goals and to meet the requirements set forth in the contest rules.

The Manassas Art Guild is in search of a new logo! We are a small, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to the promotion, creation and appreciation of the visual fine arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.) We are seeking a contemporary logo design which will convey this mission to our target audience.

Who we are: Vibrant, active, creative visual artists! Most of us work in traditional media/styles, but we appreciate non-traditional forms as well.

Our target audience: People who make visual art, people who enjoy viewing/learning about visual art, people who believe the arts contribute to society and who contribute to the arts in return.

What we are NOT: A school, a children’s group, a crafts guild, or performing arts guild.

Submissions will be screened by a panel consisting of Art Guild members and friends, with the final design to be chosen by the membership. $200 will be awarded to the winner.

The winning logo will:

Be eye catching, simple, and immediately comprehendible.
Contain the words “Manassas Art Guild, Inc.”
Convey who we are.
Appeal to our target audience.
Work just as well both with and without an address line.
Be readable at any size. We will be using it small (envelopes, web sites, flyers) and large (posters, t-shirts, banners).
Be effective in any color. Submissions may use multiple colors but must be designed to work equally well as a single color or in black and white.
Work as line art. Halftones may be used, but the design must work equally well as line art.
Rectangular or square designs are preferred because they are easier for us to work with, but other shapes will be considered.
BONUS POINTS will be given to logos which also manage to convey a sense of location. Manassas is a small, historic, family friendly town, primarily noted for its ties to the Civil War and to the railroad. However, we do not want to suggest that the Guild is about those things. Just some food for thought.

ENTRY PROCEDURES

Up to three designs per person will be accepted. No entry fee.
Digital submissions are preferred, but hard copies of original, hand-drawn art will also be accepted. Digital images should be submitted on a CD, not as a printed hard copy.

Digital submissions

Designs should be submitted as vector graphics. Images in color should use the CMYK color model. Submissions are by CD only.

Hard copy submissions

Hand-drawn entries in any media may also be submitted. Please use a surface no larger than 8.5 x 11 sheet (so it will fit onto a home scanner). The image’s LONGEST dimension should be no more and no less than 10”.

Preference will be given to logos that are “clean” and ready for reproduction; however, we will consider rough sketches of your ideas as well. Sketches may be submitted in any size and format, but will be considered only if we cannot find what we are looking for in the “clean” submissions.

Submissions must be mailed by January 20, 2011. Send all entries to:

Include your contact information (name, and phone number or email) so we may notify you if you are the winner.

Submissions will not be returned. The winner will be awarded $200. The winning entry becomes the exclusive property of the Manassas Art Guild, with no rights accruing to the creator.

[MAG Guild] shows committee and board mtgs.

Hi all,

Just a reminder that the MAG Board meets tomorrow: Sunday, 4/25, 2 p.m.,
at the Panera’s on Liberia Avenue in Manassas. (Across the street from
the Liberia Walmart).
All members are welcome to attend; an agenda will be sent by tomorrow
morning.

Also, a meeting of the shows committee will be held on Monday, 4/26, 7
pm., at the same Panera’s. FOR ALL MEMBERS WHO WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN
SHOWS THIS YEAR — it is important that you make every reasonable effort
to be at this meeting. Right now only two people are doing all the prep
work, which isn’t quite fair when you consider how many people benefit.
We won’t be asking for a huge committment, but we are asking for some.
It’s not that scary, honest! All very manageable.

PLEASE RSVP if you plan to attend the shows meeting so I’ll know how many
handouts to have ready, etc. Hope to have an agenda for that too, altho
that is one of the many prep things that I could use help with.

Greetings!
Just a note to inform you there will be a meeting of the Manassas Art
Guild Board on Sunday, March 28, at 2 p.m. We meet at the Panera’s at
9508 Liberia Avenue (across the street from the Liberia Walmart).

All members are welcome to attend. Below is the preliminary agenda. If
you plan to attend and have an item you’d like to add to the agenda,

-Setting goals. I would like MAG to begin the process of setting
both short range (6 month & 1 year) goals, and longer range goals (2, 5
and 10 years). By the end of the meeting I would like to have at least
one specific 6 month goal. At the April meeting I hope we will establish
1 year goals.
I would like to go around the room and ask each person: what is
one thing you would like to see MAG improve on, start doing, or stop
doing, and how would we make it happen? Consider who will implement
changes; timing; and funding issues. Be realistic; the pool of volunteers
is small and their time is limited.

[MAG Guild] art shows

Doing a head count … how many MAG members are planning to participate
in one or more of our exhibits this year? I don’t need committments at
this point, just trying to get a feel for how much interest there is in
exhibits, or if the focus should be elsewhere this year.

[MAG Guild] Update on eARTh exhibit

Hi all,
One of our members just raised a good point about our eARTh festival.

She was asking about exhibiting packs of notecards, rather than single
notecards. For a variety of reasons, we would like single notecards only
to be displayed as part of the MAG exhibit. What I suggest is that those
who would like to exhibit packs of cards, or would like to exhibit more
than the 10 cards allowed, consider renting a solo space. The same would
be true if you want to exhibit a larger number of shrinkwrap than allowed
by the show guidelines.

You don’t have to have professional display stands! A neatly covered and
arranged table will do, and we might even be able to help you get a table
if you don’t already have one. Buy a few mini easels at the dollar store,
and voila! you have an exhibit.

If you also have framed works, we might be able to make arrangements for
you to have a few pieces on the MAG stands. Our goal is to make it
possible for as many artists to exhibit as feasible, given our limited
resources — so please don’t hesitate to ask if your situation doesn’t
seem to fit neatly into the entry guidelines. We’ll see what we can work
out.

By the way, this only applies to members, non-members are on their own!
See, that MAG membership is worth something after all!

is open to everybody.

[MAG Guild] Announcing Photo Contest – The Art of Snow

The winter of 2010 got you down? Turn it into art! The Manassas Art Guild
is now accepting submissions for a photography competition, “The Art of
Snow.” They are looking for photographs of “snow sculptures,” whether
natural or man-made. The photos can be of snow laden branches, bizarre
icicles, strangely shaped snow drifts, or any other snow related
phenomenon which the photographer considers “scuptural”. The Guild will
also accept photos of snowmen and other manmade “snow sculptures”; the
more fantastic or unique, the better. All photos should be from the
winter of 2009-10; participants have until February 28 to send in their
submissions.

Photographers of all skills and age levels are invited to participate.
Finalists will be featured on the Guild’s web site. Eligible
photographers will also be invited to exhibit their work at the Guild’s
“eARTh” festival, to be held in April. Winners will be chosen by popular
vote at the eARTh festival, with prizes to be awarded. For complete
